Horse riding on the beach in Hammamet: what to expect and which ride to book

A horse on a beach is one of the few activities in Hammamet that photographs exactly as it sounds. It is also the one where the headline tells you least about the day, because “two hours of horse riding on the beach” is the sum of several parts, and only one of them is the beach.

How the two hours are spent

The most-reviewed ride, at €44 with 4.5 stars on 405 reviews, collects you from your hotel in a private transfer and takes you to a ranch. The session begins there, with the horse being prepared and some exercises in the ranch with the instructor. Only then do you ride out along the beach. The listing says the whole experience lasts about two hours, which means the time on the sand is shorter than the title implies, and the operator does not say by how much. If the beach is the point of your afternoon, ask how long the beach part lasts, through the booking page, before you pay.

The group is limited to six. That helps in two ways: the instructor can watch everybody, and a small group is quieter than a big one. It does not tell you the pace, and the listing gives no information on walking or trotting, so it is fair to ask.

Who it is for

The listing says it is for adults and children, experienced or not, with ponies for the little ones, and that it works as a couple’s outing or a family one. It lists pregnant women as not suitable. It names no minimum age and no weight limit; if either matters to you, and for a child under about six it should, ask in writing before booking. The listing leaves both open, and an answer from the operator is worth more than a guess.

A reviewer who booked it for a seven-year-old’s birthday said the child, who already had riding lessons, was given a bigger horse, and that the route was lovely. Another simply wrote that the instructor and staff were friendly and helpful. Two reviews tell you the experience is good for a beginner; they do not tell you it is good for every beginner.

What it costs, and what it does not

The €44 covers the hotel pickup and drop-off and the two-hour ride. Tips are not included. The exact pickup time arrives by message the day before, so the trip is easy to fit around a hotel breakfast but not to plan for the exact minute.

The list of what is included does not mention a helmet, so ask what is provided and whether child sizes are available.

The other rides

The category has eleven rides from €29.25, and several are variations on the same idea.

  • A sunset ride on the beach, 1.5 hours, €45, 4.9 stars on 17 reviews. The title promises optional swimming and the description ends with a cold drink.
  • A ride that goes into the sea, 2.5 hours, €40. It describes itself as a family outing for ages 4 to 95 with no experience needed. It is new, with two reviews so far, so treat the rating as meaningless.
  • A two-hour guided ride through the landscapes around Hammamet, €52, on easy trails with the pace adapted to the group’s level. Nine reviews, all excellent, and a different ride: countryside, not beach.
  • A combined horse and camel ride at €29.25, and a camel-and-carriage or horseback ride in the mountains from €30 with 4.6 stars on 65 reviews. The mountain one lasts two hours, of which the riding is about an hour and a half, and ends with a tasting of Tabouna bread and olive oil and a chance to photograph yourself in traditional costume.

If a quiet horse and a sea view are the aim, the beach rides win. If the ride matters more than the sand, the countryside options offer more scenery. If it is the experience of a camel you want, the mountain package is the one with the most reviews.

When it is a bad idea

If you have never ridden and are nervous, an open beach is not the easiest first setting, and a ranch start with exercises is a point in this ride’s favour. If you expect a long gallop on empty sand, note that the listing promises none: a group of six with an instructor is led. And if you are pregnant, the listing says no.

For something faster, there is quad biking in the hills, and for a day on the water, the catamaran or the pirate boat. All riding and camel tours are on the category page.
