Friguia Park from Hammamet: what to expect before you book

Friguia is the animal park that trips from Hammamet take families to on a hot day. It is a drive away from town, not a walk, so what you are really buying is a transfer with a ticket attached. Two listings do that, and they are not the same trip.

The two trips

From Hammamet/Nabeul: Trip to Friguia Animal Park costs €29.56 and lasts four hours. It has 3.7 stars on 74 reviews, the lower rating of the two, and the listing says it is likely to sell out. It includes pickup, transport and the entrance fee. The driver speaks English. The listing calls it a guided tour of the first zoo in Tunisia, with more than 60 species: zebras, elephants, tigers, lions and leopards, flamingos and pelicans in the wetlands, and a snack bar and a picnic area.

Friguia Wildlife Park with Entry costs €35, with 4.3 stars on 14 reviews. It is a transfer and a ticket, and says plainly that it is self-guided: the driver takes you there, hands over your admission ticket, and meets you at an agreed place afterwards. No guide goes inside. The park visit is listed at about four hours, with an hour’s drive each way. The header of the page, however, says only three hours.

The first is cheaper and has a guide. The second costs more, is rated higher on far fewer reviews, and leaves you alone in the park. Which of those you want depends on whether the people in your group are happy wandering without one.

Where the listings disagree

This is the part to read before you pay.

Shows. The cheaper trip says you can watch sea lions perform and see dolphins do tricks in a live show. The other trip says a sea lion show runs only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and that an “African” show runs every day. Dolphins appear only as the keyword “Dolphin watching” in its itinerary, not as a show. If a particular show matters to your children, ask the operator for the schedule on your date. Dolphin shows are also a matter of conscience for some travellers; if that is you, the animals on display in the rest of the park may be reason enough to choose something else.

Accessibility. The €29.56 trip lists wheelchair users as not suitable. The €35 trip is marked wheelchair accessible. Both cannot describe the same park. If you need step-free access, ask the operator in writing before booking and do not rely on the label.

Not suitable for. The cheaper trip also lists pregnant women and people with animal allergies. The other trip does not give a list.

What reviewers say

A reviewer of the cheaper trip said the zoo was small but nice, that the tigers, lions and elephants were the highlights, and that there were animals for all ages. Another said it had lots of animals, interactions and shops, that the pickup was on time and the guide and driver informative, that it was cash only inside, and that they could ride a camel and had a keeper take photos close to the elephants. A reviewer of the other trip fed lemurs and rode a camel, and called the driver friendly and knowledgeable.

Small, then, and closer to a half-day outing than to a safari. The animals are the point and the setting is modest. Bring cash for anything you buy inside, and comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water, which is what the listing suggests.

Is it worth it

For a family whose children like animals and who want to see lions and elephants without much planning, it is a reasonable half day. The price covers the entry, which is the sensible way to buy it, and a guide helps with the animals if there is one.

It is not worth it if you are looking for a nature experience, if the heat in the middle of the day will bother you, or if you object to animals in enclosures. For a similar price you can spend an afternoon on a pirate ship or on a pony ride. The page on Hammamet with kids puts all of them side by side.

Whichever you pick, check the opening days for the date you choose. The listings do not give any opening days.
